“…also found in other piston cores throughout the Ionian Basin (Parker, 1958;Olausson, 1961Olausson, , 1965; Grazzini-Vergnaud and Herman-Rosenberg, 1969;Herman, 1971a, b;Pastouret, 1970;Hesse, et al, 1971) was not found in the first core cut beneath the sea floor at Site 125. In particular, a series of tephra layers interbedded in and between layers of black sapropel mud in piston core RC9-185 was not found at Site 125.…”

“…These sediments, ranging from coarse sand to silt, locally contain densely packed traces belonging to Scolicia, Ophiomorpha nodosa and, subordinately, tiny branched burrows (unpublished data). Hesse, Von Rad & Fabricius (1970) found meniscate traces in Holocene sediments, collected from a depth of 840 m to 1050 m in the Otranto Strait. These authors refer to meniscate structures, typically more or less restricted to the mud layers immediately overlying sandy beds, to the heart urchin Echinocardium.…”

“…A facies similar to facies 1 has been described from Pleistocene and Holocene sediments in the Mediterranean (Hesse et al 1971;Nesteroff 1973;Kidd et al 1978;Stanley 1978).…”
