Home haemodialysis in Ireland

Abstract: Patient and technique survival rates compared favourably to published international reports. However, we identified several aspects that require attention. A small number of patients were receiving inadequate dialysis and require targeted education. Ongoing efforts to increase AVF and self-needling rates in HD units must continue. Psychosocial support is critical during the transition between dialysis modalities.

“…The number of working years lost up to the age of 66 years was estimated, based on expected working years left by age group and the predicted number of deaths broken down by age group. The average annual industrial earnings for Ireland, 24 was then applied to estimate the productivity losses due to premature mortality. As per methodological guidance, all future earnings were discounted to present values at a 4% discount rate, as is recommended for Ireland.…”

“…End-stage renal disease €46,514 Assumed that 54% 22 of people with End-stage renal disease had kidney transplantation (€30,191) 23 and 46% 22 were on haemodialysis (€65,676). 24 The estimated mean cost of a centre-based haemodialysis session was €421, 24 conducted with a schedule of three four-hour sessions every week. 24 The minimum inpatient cost due to kidney transplantation was obtained from diagnosis related group (DRG) admission in Ireland and was provided by HSE'S Healthcare Pricing Office.…”

“…Studies have shown that home healthcare has promising effects on cost, quality, and offers more flexibility to patients. For example, some studies 2–5 suggest that the cost of HHD is lower than the in‐center hemodialysis (ICHD). Besides, HHD offers a better health‐related quality of life, 4,6–11 and a low hospitalization rate 12 .…”

Furthermore, studies 13–15 indicate that HHD offers higher survival rates than the ICHD especially in the case of daily frequent and nocturnal hemodialysis.…”
