Homeostasis model assessment: insulin resistance and ?-cell function from fasting plasma glucose and insulin concentrations in man

Abstract: Summary. The steady-state basal plasma glucose and insulin concentrations are determined by their interaction in a feedback loop. A computer-solved model has been used to predict the homeostatic concentrations which arise from Varying degrees of/3-cell deficiency and insulin resistance. Comparison of a patient's fasting values with the model's predictions allows a quantitative assessment of the contributions of insulin resistance and deficient r-cell function to the fasting hyperglycaemia (homeostasis model ass… Show more

“…HOMA‐IR and QUICKI are indexes that used clinically to assess IR in patients with DM. HOMA‐IR values >2.0 or QUICKI values <0.339 indicate IR in humans (Katz et al., 2000; Mari et al., 2005; Matthews et al., 1985). Our results indicate that the administration of RTL extracts significantly decreases HOMA‐IR values and increases QUICKI values, indicating that RTL alleviates IR in diabetic rats.…”

“…The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR) index was calculated as (fasting insulin μU/L) × (fasting glucose mmol/L)/22.5 (Matthews et al., 1985). …”

“…Plasma metabolites were analyzed enzymatically,20 insulin was measured by radioimmunoassay (Millipore [UK] Ltd, Watford, UK), and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance was calculated as an index of insulin resistance 21. A time‐averaged area‐under‐the‐curve for plasma 3‐hydroxybutyrate (3OHB) and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) was calculated from hourly values taken during the study.…”
