Homicides and Maltreatment‐related Deaths of Disabled Children: A Systematic Review

Abstract: This article aims to systematically review the empirical literature in relation to the homicides and maltreatment‐related deaths of disabled children in order to better understand the risk factors and to assess support for the explanatory theories posited. These theories include: (1) the stress of caregiving; (2) altruistic intent; (3) lack of bonding with the child; (4) the challenging behaviours the child; (5) cultural beliefs about disabled children; and (6) evolutionary imperatives. “…Parents discovering such risk factors via the FNC may become encouraged to seek professional help early instead of trying to manage issues themselves at home. Additionally, the FNC covers well the causes and consequences of the CM to the child’s welfare as well as known factors that protect children [ 3 , 9 , 11 , 16 , 17 , 46 , 85 , 86 , 89 , 106 ] from CM in different circumstances. The checklist can be used by any parent or caregiver at any time, although the online application requires online access.…”

“…Additional research is needed to differentiate risk factors for fatality from those for maltreatment in general, potentially using information from prior child protective investigations and other sources of information. While beyond the scope of this article, we speculate that other services will be needed to decrease future maltreatment deaths, such as coordinated paediatric care, universal reporting, child fatality review teams, citizen review panels and public education campaigns (Dubowitz et al ., 2011; Fraser et al ., 2014; Frederick et al ., 2019; Palusci & Vandervort, 2014).…”

“…Patterns identified in the demographics of child maltreatment victims in general include age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, family size, location of residence, disability status, family structure and intimate partner violence (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2021; Frederick et al ., 2019; Freisthler & Maguire‐Jack, 2015; Miyamoto et al ., 2017). It is difficult, however, to differentiate the risk factors for fatality from among them since many of these factors overlap with families with children who die from accidental causes (Putnam‐Hornstein et al ., 2014).…”

“…This review is part of a larger systematic search of literature in relation to child homicide (Frederick et al, 2019). Relevant articles in peer-reviewed journals were identified through systematic searches in six electronic databases: AMED, CINAHL, Criminal Justice Abstracts, Medline (PubMed), PsycINFO and SCOPUS.…”
