Homocysteine and Incident Atrial Fibrillation: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

Abstract: In the prospective population-based ARIC and MESA cohorts, elevated homocysteine was modestly associated with an increased risk of incident AF, but the C6T MTHFR mutation was not associated with AF risk, suggesting that homocysteine may be a novel risk marker for AF rather than a causal risk factor.

“…Thus, these changes can induce the occurrence of atherosclerosis, and eventually cause glomerulosclerotic damage. [31][32][33][34] The results of this study found that homocysteine was more closely related to eGFR decline of patients Note. Control: healthy controls; simple DM: simple diabetes mellitus (ACR < 30 mg/g); NHADKD: non-high albuminuria diabetic kidney disease.…”

“…Even though both MMA and Hcy were used to detect B12 deficiency, MMA had a more sensitive and specific performance than Hcy [ 11 ]. However, only Hcy has been endowed with clinical implications for CVD [ 24 , 37 ]. The moderate correlation between MMA and Hcy as well as the robust association of MMA with mortality independent of Hcy suggested that MMA as a prognostic marker could not be substituted by Hcy.…”

“…Cognitive decline is common in patients with stroke, and treating B 12 deficiency and HHcy can prevent dementia 20–22. In a recent meta-analysis, patients with higher blood levels of B 12 , B 6 and folate had a reduced risk of developing atrial fibrillation, a known risk factor for cardioembolic strokes 23. Falls in the elderly, an important cause of disability, are probably also increased by loss of position sense with B 12 deficiency.…”
