Homotypic cell membrane-cloaked biomimetic nanocarrier for the accurate photothermal-chemotherapy treatment of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Background: Tumor recurrence in patients after surgery severely reduces the survival rate of surgical patients. Targeting and killing recurrent tumor cells and tissues is extremely important for the cancer treatment. Results: Herein, we designed a nano-biomimetic photothermal-controlled drug-loading platform HepM-TSL with good targeting ability and immunocompatibility for the treatment of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma. HepM-TSL can accurately target the recurrent tumor area with the aid of the cloaked hom… Show more

“… 112 Some researchers used chemotherapy and thermotherapy in combination, where the loaded chemotherapeutic drug and the photothermal agent were released into the HCC tumor area in a controlled way, thus, enhancing the synergistic effect for the treatment. 103–105 , 113 However, TSLs have some limitations in their practical application, such as causing damage to normal tissues and reduced drug release. To overcome such limitations, recent studies have focused on the structural design of liposomes.…”

“…Excitation at 808 nm can lead to the decomposition of TSL, and the photothermal and chemotherapeutic effects of ICG and doxorubicin can be realized. At the same time, this platform also has good therapeutic effects and few adverse effects ( 56 ).…”

“…Only 5%–15% of patients diagnosed at early stages are eligible candidates for curable surgical resection, whereas most patients with advanced disease have very low survival rates of approximately 5% 1,5 . For patients who cannot undergo repeat hepatectomy, the current treatment methods including radiofrequency ablation and transarterial chemoembolization offer only small survival benefits 6 . Early diagnosis is crucially important for improved survival, but the development of more effective nonsurgical cancer therapy is also important, which requires an understanding of the disease pathogenesis.…”
