Following the 2004 establishment of the World War II memorial in Washington DC, itself a product of the collective re-commemoration of the so-called ‘Greatest Generation’ of WWII veterans in the US, nonprofit organizations began the practice of ‘Honor flights’. These flights transported US veterans of the Second World War to Washington DC to visit that memorial and other commemorative sites, meet with Congressional members, and return to their local airports to great fanfare and celebration. The practice has evolved to incorporate Korean War and now Vietnam War veterans. As honor flights include much more than the veterans themselves, and as it has become an affectively charged festival for local communities to ‘honor’ their veterans during periods of unresolved wartimes, I articulate the Honor Flight as a treatment for – but also a symptom of – US ontological insecurity in the 21st Century. Honor flights are celebratory, judgmental, and political micro-practices that reflect and reproduce US militarism in ways that will likely outlast the wartimes of the 21st century United States. Along with other micro-practices of US ontological (in)security, Honor Flights threaten to destabilize the politics of military intervention hereafter, and encourage the extension of or inauguration of new times of war.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the challenges facing tourism marketing, specifically traditional local cuisines. These challenges include communication with tourists, tourists' revisit behaviors mediated by place identity and perceived interactivity with service providers. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected via random sampling in Taiwan. The model and hypothesis were tested using a structural equation modeling approach. One thousand participants were invited to respond to a questionnaire. After removing those that declined to participate or returned incomplete questionnaires, 411 valid questionnaire responses were received. Findings The findings of this study provide exciting insights into how traditional local cuisine strategies affect tourists' behavior. Governments can foster a destination image with a nostalgic aesthetic to attract more tourists. Moreover, destination marketers should provide mechanisms for instant interactions for tourists, such as mobile travel apps. Research limitations/implications This research sample focuses on promoting emotional connections between tourists and the experience of traditional local cuisines at the destination. An understanding of nostalgic cuisine could provide a better understanding of why tourists are willing to engage in unique travel experiences. Practical implications Traditional local cuisine providers should consider aesthetics, including their decoration, style, and markers. Further, it is important that service staff make tourists feel comfortable and satisfied with the traditional local cuisine experience. Originality/value This study contributes to the destination marketing of traditional local cuisines from the perspective of nostalgia. The findings of this study provide interesting insights into how traditional local cuisine strategies affect tourists' behaviors.

Senior tourism is a rapidly growing market in China, and global players have begun to attract senior tourists from China using diversified ways to help boost the industry in different destinations worldwide. However, scant research has been conducted to examine senior tours accompanied by offspring, let alone the Chinese senior context itself. This study utilizes autoethnography to examine a senior international tour accompanied by a young son.The study confirms the existence of six sources of conflict, but verifies that harmony is the more important feature in such a tour. Related practical implications on how to better arrange such tours are presented.
