Hop Flower Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extracts Coupled with Carriers with Solubilizing Properties—Antioxidant Activity and Neuroprotective Potential

Anna Stasiłowicz-Krzemień,
Judyta Cielecka-Piontek

Abstract: Lupuli flos shows many biological activities like antioxidant potential, extended by a targeted effect on selected enzymes, the expression of which is characteristic for neurodegenerative changes within the nervous system. Lupuli flos extracts (LFE) were prepared by supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction with various pressure and temperature parameters. The antioxidant, chelating activity, and inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and tyrosinase by extracts were stud… Show more

“…For the DPPH assay, the procedure outlined by Stasiłowicz-Krzemień et al [ 122 ] was followed. First, 25.0 µL of each sample was pipetted to 175.0 µL of the DPPH solution (blank was a mixture of 175.0 µL DPPH solution and water).…”

“…A linear regression equation was established to relate the trolox concentration with its corresponding scavenging percentage (DPPH and ABTS) or absorbance (CUPRAC and FRAP), subsequently, the results presented as mg trolox/g plant material were calculated through the equation, according to the antioxidant properties of the extracts in all four assays [43,44]. The antioxidant potential was determined according to the previously reported method [45,46]. Each measurement in the antioxidant studies was repeated six times.…”

“…This is due to its low critical point (31.2 °C, 7.4 MPa), lack of toxicity, low cost and non-flammability (19). The lower temperatures required for this type of extraction may be beneficial for heat-sensitive compounds (20). Among these types of compounds we can include lycopene (2).…”
