Hop tests and psychological PROs provide a demanding and clinician-friendly RTS assessment of patients after ACL reconstruction, a registry study

Abstract: Background: There is growing interest in assessing psychological well-being in patients after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. It is unknown whether an assessment of psychological outcome in addition to tests of muscle function can facilitate decisions on return to sport (RTS). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate passing rates in different physical RTS test batteries, with and without the inclusion of psychological outcome measures 1 year after ACL reconstruction. Method: In this c… Show more

“…The proportion of participants with concomitant injuries ranged from 0 to 89% amongst included studies [ 62 , 83 , 85 , 112 ]. The majority of studies included participants who were active in sport, either in preinjury competitive sport (38 original studies, 46%),[ 13 , 15 , 21 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 45 , 50 , 54 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 63 , 64 , 67 , 69 , 70 , 72 , 73 , 76 78 , 80 , 83 , 85 , 86 , 89 , 91 , 92 , 96 , 97 , 100 , 102 , 108 , 111 , 113 , 114 ], or recreational sport (10 original studies, 12%) [ 43 , 44 , 53 , 68 , 74 , 82 , 103 , 107 , 109 ]. Only one subgroup of participants in one study was classified as elite athletes [ 77 ].…”

“…Because hop tests are clinician-friendly, they are often employed because of the lack of equipment needed to execute them. 11,33,42 Hop testing symmetry has also been associated with self-reported knee function; however, this may be more of a reflection of psychological readiness than physical readiness. 22,45 This may explain why participants who only passed hop tests reported higher IKDC scores than those who only passed strength tests in our sample among those with test disagreement.…”

“…Psychological readiness has been identified as an important factor to be assessed for RTS after ACLR. 2,33 Patients who have returned to their preinjury activities reported greater psychological readiness assessed by ACL-RSI and higher QoL assessed by ACL-QoL and the KOOS-QoL subscale. 5 ACL-QoL involves questions about emotional/psychological aspects; therefore, ACL-RSI has a moderate correlation with ACL-QoL.…”
