Horizontal bone‐augmentation procedures in implant dentistry: prosthetically guided regeneration

Abstract: The rehabilitation of partially or totally edentulous patients with implant-supported prostheses has become routine, with excellent long-term outcome. A proper implant position is mandatory to achieve good functional and esthetic outcome and may require an adequate amount of alveolar bone and surrounding soft tissue. When this is lacking because of atrophy, sequelae of periodontal disease, traumas or congenital malformations, increased bone volume and/or keratinized mucosa can be obtained by guided bone regene… Show more

“…The prosthetic portion of implant‐supported rehabilitation then becomes the central point in implant placement and in guiding successive therapeutic steps . According to Chiapasco & Casentini , a prosthetic‐driven approach to implantology provides clear definition of the size and the shape of ridge defects and helps select the best reconstructive technique. Different classes of ridge defects and their most appropriate treatment can be defined in a three‐dimensional radiograph.…”

“…3 There are some options for allowing the use of standard implants when this situation occurs, 4 such as guided bone regeneration, 5 onlay and inlay bone graft, 6 distraction osteogenesis, 7 and nerve lateralization. 3 There are some options for allowing the use of standard implants when this situation occurs, 4 such as guided bone regeneration, 5 onlay and inlay bone graft, 6 distraction osteogenesis, 7 and nerve lateralization.…”

“…4,17 In both maxilla and mandible, short implants have demonstrated an excellent survival rate when compared to standard implants used in grafted regions; the most frequent use of short implants occurs in cases that need more than one implant, in splinted prosthesis. 4,17 In both maxilla and mandible, short implants have demonstrated an excellent survival rate when compared to standard implants used in grafted regions; the most frequent use of short implants occurs in cases that need more than one implant, in splinted prosthesis.…”

“…As it should be emphasized on, primary stability of the bone graft is a prerequisite for the success of ridge augmentation and subsequent implantation . In addition, favorable esthetic outcome is mostly demanded in anterior area and can be achieved by reconstructing sufficient bone volume to support soft tissue to grow on . In GBR technique with only xenogenous bone particulate, mechanical properties of the filling material can be described as weak compared to bone block, thus causing the possible consequence of material displacement.…”
