Horizontal gene transfer amongst probiotic lactic acid bacteria and other intestinal microbiota: what are the possibilities? A review

Abstract: Probiotics are live cultures, usually lactic acid bacteria, which are ingested to promote a healthy gastrointestinal tract. These organisms require certain traits to survive and compete in this niche, but these traits may be transferred to other microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Similarly, virulence factors from pathogens may be acquired by probiotic strains. Bacteria have developed a plethora of methods to transfer genetic material between strains, species and genera. In this review, the possibl… Show more

“…Transfer of antibiotic resistance from animals to humans through food products derived from animals colonized by resistant bacteria is quite possible (Gonzalez-Zorn and Escudero, 2012). However, the role of LAB as reservoir of antibiotic resistance determinants with transmission potential to pathogenic species is now increasingly acknowledged (Marshall et al, 2009;van Reenen and Dicks, 2011).…”

“…As in the case of meats and Enterobacteriaceae, several fermented foods have recently been suggested as potential vehicles for the exchange of antibiotic resistance genes between acid lactic bacteria and other pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract [29]. As most of the Lactobacillus species isolated in this study presented resistance to both of the drugs, it will be interesting to determine in the course of future studies whether the resistance of these strains results from an intrinsic mechanism or are due to genes encoding possible transferable resistance determinants.…”

“…This interesting result supposes that it could be intrinsic resistance. Contrary to the acquired resistance, the latter represents only a negligible risk of propagation [35].…”
