Abstract. Mechanisms of the suppression of gonadotropic activity of the corpus allatum (CA) in macropterous females were compared with those previously reported for either diapause or starving non-diapause brachypterous females by reciprocal transplantations of the neuroendocrine complexes (comprising the brain-suboesophageal ganglion-corpora cardiaca-CA). The denervated CA stimulated reproduction in most females of all experimental groups suggesting an inhibition of the CA via nervous connections with the brain. The inhibition of the CA within the transplanted neuroendocrine complex was measured by the reproductive performance of feeding recipient females deprived of their own CA. The complex from starving non-diapause brachypterous females stimulated reproduction in 58.3-78.9% of recipients suggesting that the inhibition of the CA was mostly overcome by the stimulating internal milieu of feeding females. In contrast, the "macropterous" complex stimulated reproduction in only 18.8-37.5% of recipients, similar to the "diapause brachypterous" complex (32.0%). The results indicate that the "macropterism", similar to the diapause, is associated with a considerably lower responsiveness of the neuroendocrine complex to humoral stimulation by feeding compared to the responsivenes of the "starving" complex from brachypterous non-diapause females. On the other hand, the CA of macropterous females is of intermediate size between that of the feeding non-diapause and diapause brachypterous females, similar to the CA of the non-diapause brachypterous females deprived of food. Overall, the data suggest that the suppression of the CA activity results from a combination of the diapause-like refractoriness of the neuroendocrine complex with the starvation-like inhibition of the CA growth. Regulation of the CA activity is discussed in relation to the "oogenesis-flight syndrome" recorded for flying wingpolymorphic species of insects.

Abstract. In the present study the hypothesis that there is a feedback between juvenile hormone and adipokinetic hormones (AKHs) was investigated by topical application of the juvenoid methoprene on 9-day-old adult males of the firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus. This juvenoid (2 µg) induced a significant reduction of haemolymph lipids 24 h after treatment; however, it did not significantly reduce the ability of Pyrap-AKH (10 pmol/bug) to mobilize fat body lipids 6-72 h after the methoprene application. The same methoprene treatment elicited a significant increase of AKH content in the CNS (central nervous system: brain + corpora cardiaca + corpora allata) of experimental males 24 and 48 h after the juvenoid application. A significant decrease in the AKH level in the haemolymph was recorded at the same times and under the same experimental conditions. Similar results were observed when production of the AKHs from the CNS of topically treated males was measured under in vitro conditions. It is suggested that methoprene may reduce AKH release from the CNS resulting in an increase in the AKH content of the CNS due to accumulation rather than stimulation of AKH synthesis. Possible consequences of this phenomenon on the physiology of P. apterus are discussed.

Some species of ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) mate both before and after overwintering. The purpose of the pre-diapause mating was studied in the alien invasive ladybird Harmonia axyridis (Pallas 1773). Our study demonstrates the persistence of high fecundity (daily oviposition rate of 21 eggs per fertilized female during the first month of reproduction) and fertility (85 % of eggs hatching) of females of H. axyridis after long storage (up to eight months) at low temperature (6°C). The females were not mated after activation in spring and had to rely on the sperm supply maintained from the pre-winter period (58 % of females were fertilized). Unfertilized females also laid eggs but in low numbers (an average of 345 eggs by virgin females during an individual's lifetime, 1,174 eggs by females fertilized before winter) and after a longer pre-oviposition period (2-5 weeks in comparison to 7-8 days for fertilized females). We show that the unfertilised eggs were not trophic eggs. The high sperm survival ability observed questions the need for the high levels of sexual activity generally observed in Coccinellidae. Fertilized females of H. axyridis may found large colonies after dispersal to new areas even without males, which contributes to the striking invasive ability of this species.
