“…has seen 2 live adult Tachypleus gigas in a catch of Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda at Lim Chu Kang, which is a typical C. ro tun dicauda site, and a dead T. gigas in a net at the Mandai mudflats. Although un common, such co-existence has also been reported from the east coast of India, where T. gigas was more numerous in con ditions of high salinity but as the salinity decreased at the site, C. ro tun dicauda became more numerous (Chatterji 1999, Mishra 2009). Co-existence may occur in the Strait of Johor, an estuary where salinities also vary during the year depending upon the state of the tide, weather and terrestrial runoff.…”

“…The Asian horseshoe crab T. tridentatus and the coastal horseshoe crab T. gigas live in sandy to muddy habitats (Chatterji & Abidi 1993, Davidson et al 2008) while the mangrove horseshoe crab C. rotundicauda inhabits muddy areas, commonly in brackish waters (Chatterji & Abidi 1993, Ng & Sivasothi 2002, Davidson et al 2008. In India, some T. gigas co-exist with C. ro tun dicauda (Chatterji 1999, Mishra 2009). Unlike the other 3 species, C. rotun dicauda does not move out to sea with the receding tide.…”

“…The global distribution of all species of horseshoe crab has been well described by Mikkelsen (1988), but his book was based on work carried out before the late 1980s. Since then, land reclamation and coastal development or degradation have destroyed much of the habitat of horseshoe crabs (Savage 2001, Ng & Sivasothi 2002, Mishra 2009). Moreover, the biology, ecology and breeding patterns of C. rotundicauda have not been as well documented as those of the North American species Limulus polyphemus (Linnaeus, 1758).…”
