HORST - Home router sharing based on trust

Abstract: Today's Internet services are increasingly accessed from mobile devices, thus being responsible for growing load in mobile networks. At the same time, more and more WiFi routers are deployed such that a dense coverage of WiFi is available. Results from different related works suggest that there is a high potential of reducing load on the mobile networks by offloading data to WiFi networks, thereby improving mobile users' quality of experience (QoE) with Internet services. Additionally, the storage of the route… Show more

“…These power models are valuable, as future Internet services may likely run on the end-user's premises. Examples of possible future distributed services are NaDas [24], Multiservice Home Gateways [20] or HORST [21]. These aim at improving the Quality of Service (QoS) of the specific service and reducing the dependency on the up-link bandwidth, while requiring local computation and storage.…”

“…The idle resources of such devices may be used to provide network access to other users [21] or pre-load content for their owners, while they are away (i.e., caching, pre-fetching of content, running local 1 http://www.itu.int/net4/itu-d/icteye/, accessed 2013-12-04 2 http://www.eia.gov/aeo, accessed 2013-12-04 services). The devices are built to be cheap and reasonably energy efficient.…”

“…In particular, Seufert et al [19] proposed a framework that targets traffic offloading from mobile networks to WiFi, content prefetching and caching on the home routers, and content delivery. Router sharing and a trust mechanism are also part of the framework.…”

“…Especially operators of cellular access networks face huge loads and costly data transmissions, and thus, promote o oading of tra c ows to xed networks. O oading is mostly implemented via Wi-Fi, which is a term coined by the Wi-Fi Alliance 4 that comprises technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standards 56 . Complementary Wi-Fi access is provided by public Wi-Fi hotspots with a high capacity xed network backhaul link.…”
