Abstract: Summary The genus Ribes L., known as currants and gooseberries, contains more than 150 diverse species indigenous throughout the northern hemisphere and along the Rocky Mountain, Sierra Nevada and Sierra Madres in North America through mountain ranges of Central America to the Andes in South America. Beginning in the 1400s, four main crop types, black currants (Ribes, subgenus: Ribes, section: Botrycarpum), red and white currants (Ribes, subgenus: Ribes, section: Ribes) and gooseberries (Ribes, subgenus: Gross… Show more

“…Although some cultivars of R. nigrum L. are immune to blister rust, susceptive cultivars of the European black currant produce more inoculum than most native Ribes species (Z ambino 2010). Ribes cultivation practices that could minimize the threat to white pine include hazard assessment for selecting plantation and orchard sites, use of resistant cultivars, and cultural practices that reduce inoculum (M uir and H unt 2000; H ummer and D ale 2010).…”

It is widely cultivated across the temperate zones of Europe, Russia and New Zealand (Brennan, 2008) where fruit are primarily used for juice production (Brennan and Graham, 2009).…”

“…The main fungal diseases in black currant plantations are anthracnose caused by Drepanopeziza ribis (Kleb), septoria leaf spot caused by Mycosphaerella ribis (Fuckel) Lindau), mildew caused by Sphaerotheca mors-uvae (Schwein.) Berk & Curtis) and white pine blister rust caused by Cronatium ribicola Fisch (Brennan 2008;Xu et al 2009;Hummer & Dale 2010).…”
