Hospital procedure volume and prognosis with respect to testicular cancer patients: a population‐based study in Osaka, Japan

Abstract: Since the introduction of cisplatin-containing chemotherapy in the late 1970s, the standard chemotherapy protocol of cisplatin, etoposide and bleomycin has markedly improved the prognosis of testicular germ-cell cancer (TGCC).(1) Furthermore, subsequently developed salvage chemotherapy regimens, salvage surgery, highly stereotactic radiation therapy and progress in diagnostic modalities have further improved survival even with advanced-stage cancer and/or distant metastasis.(2-4) TGCC is known worldwide as a c… Show more

“…Beyond these data, the impact of a particular experience in treatment of testicular cancer could be an issue. It is well known that patients treated in experienced cancer centers fare better than those treated in general institutions [19,20,21,22,23]. In the late 1980s, the German Testicular Cancer Study Group (GTCSG), a group of West German urologists, medical oncologists, and radiooncologists set out to enhance their knowledge about this rare cancer by scientific endeavors and to improve the treatment quality on a national level by establishing management guidelines [24].…”

“…There were differences in peri-operative mortality (7% vs 16%), negative margins (93% vs 75%) and recurrence rates (7% vs 16%) [17]. Hospital volume was also associated with improved survival in Japan, suggesting it was not just about surgical experience but also experience in all team members and infrastructure involved in perioperative care [18].…”
