Host cell egress of Brucella abortus requires BNIP3L‐mediated mitophagy

Abstract: The facultative intracellular pathogen Brucella abortus interacts with several organelles of the host cell to reach its replicative niche inside the endoplasmic reticulum. However, little is known about the interplay between the intracellular bacteria and the host cell mitochondria. Here, we showed that B. abortus triggers substantive mitochondrial network fragmentation, accompanied by mitophagy and the formation of mitochondrial Brucellacontaining vacuoles during the late steps of cellular infection. Brucella… Show more

“…To determine the role of host ferroptosis in Brucella egress, a 24-period bacterial egress quantification procedure was conducted as reported previously [11,47,48]. RAW264.7 macrophages were seeded into 24-well plates and infected with Brucella M5 at a MOI of 100.…”

“…The intracellular pathogens L. monocytogenes , B. abortus , and Mycobacterium bovis induce mitophagy through varied mechanisms [ 92 , 93 , 94 ]. P. aeruginosa also induces mitophagy through the action of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated systems (CRISPR-Cas) [ 95 ].…”

“…Therefore, it is not surprising that some pathogens such as M. bovis promote mitophagy to competitively suppress host xenophagy and increase intracellular survival [ 92 ]. Finally, B. abortus -mediated mitophagy plays an important role in the propagation of infection to neighboring cells through the regulation of the packaging and egress of bacteria-containing vacuoles [ 94 ].…”
