Host-plant range and parasitoids of obliquebanded and three-lined leafrollers (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

Abstract: Eighteen parasitoid species were found associated with obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), and three-lined leafroller, Pandemis limitata Robinson, from 1982 to 1984, on apple and other host plants in the southern interior of British Columbia. The leafroller parasitoids included a Glypta Gravenhorst species (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Diadegma eureka (Ashmead) and Diadegma interruptum pterophorae (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), and Hemisturmia tortricis (Coquillett) (Diptera: T… Show more

“…However, the signi脼cant delay in the construction of leaf shelters may affect the 脼tness of larvae. In orchards, there are an array of parasites of C. rosaceana larvae (Li et al 1999, Vakenti et al 2001, Wilkinson et al 2004) and generalist predators (Bostanian et al 1984; T.E.S., unpublished data); the increased time during which larvae are exposed will increase their chance of being preyed upon by natural enemies.…”

“…A rich complex of 暇45 parasitoid species has been reported attacking obliquebanded leafroller (Barron and Bisdee 1984, Pogue 1985, Rice et al 1988, Hagley and Barber 1991, Li et al 1999, Vakenti et al 2001); however, the level of parasitism and the parasitoid species present varies greatly among crops and regions surveyed. In California pistachios, recent high obliquebanded leafroller population densities and resultant crop losses have led farm managers to apply insecticide(s), most commonly tebufenozide and carbaryl.…”

“…While M. iridescens is relatively ubiquitous, being reared from larvae in the Tortricidae, Lasiocampidae, Gelechiidae, Plutellidae, and Geometridae families in surveys from Ontario to California, it has rarely been reported as the dominant parasitoid or a key biological control agent. For example, while M. iridescens was reared from the obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana Harris (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in the Canadian Provinces of British Columbia and Ontario, and Wyoming in the United States (Barron and Bisdee 1984, Pogue 1985, Maltais et al 1989, Hagley and Barber 1991, Vakenti et al 2001, it was relatively rare in each collection. A recent exception was a survey of California pistachio orchards in the Fresno County area, where M. iridescens was the dominant parasitoid species and was considered a promising biological control agent for obliquebanded leafroller in this crop and region (Daane et al 2002).…”
