The aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) are one of major pests of agriculturally important crops, including vegetables, across the world. They suck plant sap, cause leaf curling, yellowing and stunted growth of the host plants. They also act as vectors of many viral diseases in plants. In order to explore aphid pests and their naturally occurring bio-control agents (parasitoids and predators), an extensive field survey was conducted in different vegetable ecosystems of the Kashmir valley during the years from 2014-2019. Moreover, a through literature survey pertaining to aphids, reported from Jammu and Kashmir, was also done. Accordingly, based on these studies, it was concluded that as many as 18 species of aphids belonging to 12 genera infest as many as 26 species and 30 varieties of vegetable crops in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). It was also concluded that at least 29 species of insect predators and 17 species of parasitoids occur naturally to suppress these aphid pest species in vegetable ecosystems in J&K. In sum, through this study, a comprehensive account of aphids and their natural enemies with reference to vegetable crops in J&K is presented. This work will be useful for the studies concerning the devising of strategies for Integrated Control Program of aphids, especially through utilization of natural bio-control agents.

The use of pheromone traps can minimize the excess application of synthetic insecticides, while can also benefit the environment. The use of pheromone traps has been promoted and suggested to vegetable farmers of Bangladesh for widespread adoption. However, the majority of farmers have continued to spray insecticides instead of using pheromone traps. The present study investigated the factors influencing farmers’ adoption, dis-adoption, and non-adoption behavior of pheromone traps for managing insect pests. Primary data were collected from 438 vegetable growers. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression. About 27% of the farmers abandoned the technique shortly after it was adopted as it was time-consuming to manage insect pests. Marginal effect analysis revealed that the likelihood of continued adoption was 34.6% higher for farmers who perceived that pheromone traps were useful in controlling insect pests. In contrast, the likelihood of dis-adoption was 16.5% and 10.4% higher for farmers who maintained communication with private pesticide company agents and neighbor farmers, respectively. Extension services by government extension personnel might be encouraged and maintained as a key component in increasing farmer awareness regarding the use of pheromone trap. Strategies to promote pheromone traps in vegetable production should highlight the positive impacts to farmers and the environment, as this would most likely lead to their continued and widespread use after initial adoption.

Exploration of natural enemy fauna of aphids and associated ant species from eastern dry zone of Karnataka, India

Purposive surveys were conducted at regular intervals in different districts of eastern dry zone of Karnataka (Zone 5) during the year 2021-22, to document the natural enemy fauna and the ant species associated with aphids. Out of 34 aphid species recorded, 16 species of aphids were preyed on by 14 species of predators belonging to Coccinellidae, Syrphidae, Hemerobiidae and Chamaemyiidae and seven species of aphids were found parasitized by eight species of parasitoids belonging to Braconidae. Predators belonging to Coccinellidae and Syrphidae were recorded more abundantly with six species in each family, preying on 12 and 10 aphid species, respectively. Among the aphid parasitoids, Aphidius spp. was the more abundant taxa. Eleven species of ants belonging to Formicinae, Myrmicinae and Dolichoderinae were found associated with 17 aphid species. Ants belonging to the genus Camponotus were found to be more abundant and associated with 10 species of aphids. A comprehensive list of predators, parasitoids and ants associated with different aphid species was put together during this study.
