Brazing is a joining process that involves melting a filler metal and flowing it into the joint between two closely fitting parts. While brazing is primarily used for joining metals, it can also be adapted for certain coating deposition applications. The present study investigates the microstructure and corrosion behavior and sliding wear resistance of WC (Tungsten Carbide)-CoCr-Ni reinforced Co-based composite coatings deposited onto the surface of AISI 904L stainless steel using a vacuum brazing method. The primary objective of this experimental work was to evaluate the influence of WC-based particles added to the microstructure and the properties of the brazed Co composite coating. The focus was on enhancing the sliding wear resistance of the coatings while ensuring that their corrosion resistance in chloride media was not adversely affected. The morphology and microstructure of the composite coatings were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and phase identification by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The SEM analysis revealed in the coating the presence of intermetallic compounds and carbides, which increase the hardness of the material. The sliding wear resistance was assessed using the pin-on-disk method, and the corrosion properties were determined using electrochemical measurements. The results obtained showed that as the WC particle ratio in the Co-based composite coating increased, the mechanical properties improved, the alloy became harder, and the tribological properties were improved. The evaluation of the electrochemical tests revealed no significant alterations of the manufactured composite in comparison with the Co-based alloys. In all cases, the corrosion behavior was better compared with that of the stainless-steel substrate.

Super-duplex stainless steel (SDSS) shows high mechanical and corrosion resistance because of the balanced structure of austenite and ferrite. However, maintaining this phase ratio after welding is a challenge. The use of austenite stabilizing components is recommended to balance the microstructure. The addition of alloying elements presents a challenge because of the characteristics of Nd:YAG pulsed laser welding. An approach, which has proven to be effective, is to use metal electroplating to prepare the surfaces of the mechanical SDSS components that will be welded, therefore promoting the phase balance in the fusion zone. While the effects of metals such as nickel as an austenite stabilizer are well recognized, cobalt’s effects require more research. The present work investigated the influence of the use of cobalt addition in the joining process by preliminary electroplating on UNS S32750 SDSS Nd: YAG pulsed laser welding, specifically regarding microstructure and microhardness. Three conditions were investigated, changing the thickness of the deposited cobalt layer. The addition of cobalt modified the morphology and increased the volume fraction of austenite. An austenite volume fraction of around 48% was obtained using a 35 μm thick cobalt coating. The microhardness was affected by austenite/ferrite proportions. The microhardness dropped from about 375 HV to 345 HV as the cobalt layer’s thickness rose, being similar to that of the base metal. The effect of cobalt as an austenite stabilizer was observed, and the cobalt electroplating technique was effective to correct the phase balance on UNS S32750 laser welding.

Coatings deposition using different materials and various techniques are a viable method to improve the surface properties of alloys, especially the surface strength with improved tribological properties. In this study, a series of Co-based reinforced composite coatings containing different ratios of WC–CoCr–Ni particles were fabricated by laser cladding onto the surface of an AISI 904L stainless steel substrate. The main goal of this experimental work was to determine the influence of the WC particle addition on the structure and properties of the obtained Co composite coating in terms of improving the sliding wear resistance without negative influence the corrosion resistance in chloride media. The effect of the WC particles onto the microstructure, phase composition, microhardness, wear and corrosion properties, was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) in association with the evolution of the friction coefficient and that of the polarization curves, respectively. The achieved results have shown that the new phase composition, especially developed due to the remelting of the WC phase, led to an improvement of the wear resistance. No significant changes were recorded after the electrochemical tests evaluation.
