House-Level Risk Factors for Triatoma dimidiata Infestation in Colombia

Abstract: Abstract. In Colombia, the main vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, are Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma dimidiata. T. dimidiata is present in the east region of Colombia as domestic, peridomestic, and sylvatic populations, resulting in difficulties for its control. A cost-effective way to prioritize houses for treatment is to stratify houses based on risk factors. In this study, risk factors were evaluated for potential associations with domicile infestation of T. dimidiata. The… Show more

“…También, se ha reportado como factor asociado con la infestación la localización de la casa cerca de la periferia de la localidad, la presencia de gallineros y de dos o más perros (8,67). No obstante, Zeledón, et al, reportaron la colonización por especímenes silvestres de T. dimidiata de un ecótopo artificial en el patio trasero de una casa nueva, bien construida, en Santa Ana, provincia de San José, en Costa Rica (61).…”

“…However, CDCP does not use spatial technologies like GPS, GIS, and spatial analysis in the endemic departments [24]. The main species transmitting T. cruzi in Colombia are R. prolixus and T. dimidiata , which present a very complex epidemiological cycle that involves domestic, peridomestic, and sylvatic habitats [25, 26]. However, other species such as P. geniculatus , R. pallescens , T. maculata , and T. venosa play an important role as secondary vectors of the parasite.…”

“…[1][2][3] Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, a condition that according to the last estimation made by WHO in Colombia affected nearly 437,960 habitants by 2010, and there were at risk nearly 4,813,543 people, 131,388 persons with Chagasic cardiopathy, 5,274 annual cases due to vectorial transmission, 1,046 new cases due to congenital transmission each year, and 116,221 women with ages ranging between 15 and 44 years were infected. 4 Triatoma dimidiata is a highly variable species with a high genetic diversity and is in fact a species complex; this diversity may indeed explain the ecological diversity of habitats and behavior encountered by this complex.…”
