Household chaos as a moderator of the link between parents’ inhibitory control and parenting quality.

Abstract: This study considered how mothers' and fathers' inhibitory control, an aspect of executive functioning (EF) that reflects how well an individual can suppress a dominant response to perform a subdominant response, is associated with observations of their parenting quality when children were 7.5 years old. Furthermore, aspects of the daily home environment may strengthen or undermine parents' ability to draw on their inhibitory control and exhibit high-quality parenting. Household chaos, including clutter, confu… Show more

“…Second and relatedly, we draw a conceptual overlap between inhibitory control and intrusiveness behaviours as represented within the umbrella of 'hostility/rejection', a theory-driven parenting behaviour dimension (Landry & Smith, 2010). For example, caregivers with better inhibitory control might display less intrusive behaviours and perhaps, better regulate their own behaviours during interactions with their children (Altenburger et al, 2023). Finally, our inquiry is motivated by the proximal regulatory mechanisms framework which emphasises that how caregivers regulate interactions with their child must be preceded by how they regulate their own behaviours (Calkins, 2011).…”
