Household Satellite Account for France

Abstract: We estimate in a household satellite account (HHSA) the value of French domestic production in 2010 and 1998, using the input method and following Eurostat's recommendations. In line with previous studies, we find that extending the system of national accounts (SNA) frontier of production to domestic activities (house chores, cooking, care …) has a sizeable effect on key macroeconomic indicators (+33 percent GDP, −5 p.p. GDP growth, +50 percent disposable income, +58 percent consumption, and −10 p.p. of purcha… Show more

“…The estimation of household work in Poland according to the Eurostat Proposals was made twice using the data from harmonized time use surveys made in and 2013[Błaszczak-Przybycińska 2005Błaszczak-Przybycińska, Marszałek 2015]. The sample size was appropriately 20,000 and 45,000 respondents, respectively.…”

“…Studies on the valuation of unpaid work and non-market household production have a long worldwide tradition, but there is no consensus reached in the field of common methodology. Methods using inputs are applied more often Szép 2003;Schäfer 2004;Varjonen, Aalto 2006, 2010Ruger, Varjonen 2008, Hamunen,Varjonen, Soinne 2012Poissonnier, Roy 2013] than methods based on outputs [Holloway, Short, Tamplin 2002;Fender 2012] which are compatible to productivity measurement and GDP formation. In spite of that, a crucial decision on estimation was reached suggesting that the valuation of unpaid work should be calculated using one of three different approaches: replacement cost, average cost and opportunity cost [OECD 2010;Kuwahara 2010].…”

“…Household production is a nonmarket activity whose value can be measured by its opportunity or market cost. A reasonable practice is to evaluate the time devoted to children at the market value, that is the wage at which families would pay the person that would substitute parents' care (Sharpe et al 2011, Caiumi andPoissonnier and Roy 2017).…”

“…1 Early mentions include Gilman (1898), Leontieff (1941), Marshall (1920), and Pigou (1932). More recent work is extensive and a sample includes Bridgman (2016), Nordhaus (2006), Abraham and Mackie (2006), Stiglitz, Sen and Fitoussi, and (2009), and Poissonnier and Roy (2017). Jorgenson pioneered the idea of counting household purchases of durable goods as investment rather than consumption.…”
