“…In contrast, a study of healthy children in Japan attending routine public medical checkups demonstrated an OR (95z CI) of 3.5 (2.6-4.7)-3.9 (2.8-5.3) in children with older siblings (2). A likely explanation for this is that the increased range of social activities undertaken by the older siblings' increases the opportunities for nasopharyngeal colonization with S. pneumoniae and transmission to their younger siblings (13,14). This study demonstrated a seasonal variation in pneumococcal colonization, with a significant decrease among participants in summer.…”

“…For each isolate, at least 20 distinguishable pneumococcal colonies on TSA plates were evaluated to determine the fraction of opaque colonies. The restriction fragment patterns of genomic DNAs purified from the restreaks of one colony of each phase type isolated from each body site were analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) as described elsewhere (9). Statistical analysis was performed with Prism 4 (GraphPad Software, Inc.) to compare the fractions of opaque colonies.…”

“…In South Africa, 74.5% (35 children out of 47) children with otitis media were due to Streptococcus pneumoniae (Huebner et al, 2003). Several studies have examined household transmission of Streptococcus pneumoniae; most of such studies have suggested that children were the source of transmission to adults in the family (Hoshino et al, 2002;Shimada et al, 2002, Leino et al, 2001. Oniyangi et al, (2006) reported that 60% of HIV/AIDS patient children in Abuja were admitted based on the diagnosis of pneumonia and this disease caused the death of 71.4% of them.…”
