“…3. High cognitive ability: Cognitive function in the LASI survey was measured through five broad domains (memory, orientation, arithmetic function, executive function and object naming) adapted from the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) 43 , and the cognitive module of the United States Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and its sister studies such as the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), and the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) 44 , 45 . Memory was measured using immediate word recall and delayed word recall.…”

“…The arithmetic function was measured through backward counting, a serial seven subtraction task and a task involving two computations 39 , 44 . Paper folding (folding a piece of paper according to instructions), pentagon drawing (drawing intersecting circles) and object naming methods were also followed to measure the cognitive functions among older adults 45 . A composite score of 0–43 was computed using the domain wise measures.…”

“…The LASI collected the information related to different cognition measures in several dimensions including memory, orientation, arithmetic functioning, and visuospatial and constructional ability. The survey adapted these measures from the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) 37 , and the cognitive module of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), and the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) 38 , 39 . Thus, the cognitive functions in the current study are based on the scoring of the following cognitive sub-domains: immediate word recall (0–10 points), and delayed word recall (0–10 points); orientation related to time (0–4 points), and place (0–4 points); arithmetic ability based on serial 7 s’ subtraction task (0–5 points), a task involving two computations (0–2) and backward counting from 20 (0–2 points) 38 ; visuospatial and constructional skills based on paper folding (folding a piece of paper according to instructions) (0–3) and pentagon drawing (drawing intersecting circles) (0–1); and object naming (0–2) 39 .…”

“…These factors are also largely influenced by differential exposure (e.g., by nativity status and country of origin) to myriad social, economic, political, behavioral, and environmental determinants of brain health. Furthermore, the differences we continue to observe among nativity and country of origin Latino subgroups, and in comparison to U.S.-born non-Latino Whites, may reflect differential environmental exposures given the growing evidence that urban air pollution and indoor air pollution (i.e., combustion of solid cooking fuels in low- and middle-income countries) affect cognitive health ( Ailshire & Clarke, 2015 ; Ailshire & Crimmins, 2014 ; Kulick et al, 2020 ; Saenz, 2021 ; Saenz et al, 2018 , 2021 ). Future research should aim to further investigate differences in such exposure across groups by, for example, matching respondents on urbanicity to account for factors associated with cognition not captured in this study.…”
