How Accurate are Travel Forecasts: Back Casting of Truck Lane Restrictions using Multi-Resolution Modeling Methods

Abstract: The integration of mesoscopic and microscopic simulation models provide expanded dimensions of modeling capabilities by taking the strengths of both model resolutions. Many transportation agencies, practitioners and researchers are beginning to see the advantages of using multiple levels of resolution when analyzing corridor specific problems. Mesoscopic models use dynamic traffic assignment to reroute traffic given various traffic conditions. Microscopic models are used to analyze traffic conditions at the in… Show more

“…The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recommends that highway agencies use the 13-Category Scheme to classify vehicles, which TxDOT now uses for its manual vehicle classification program. Traffic counters must classify vehicles accurately following this scheme ( 4 – 6 ). According to the Traffic Recorder Instruction Manual ( 6 ),The FHWA 13-Category Scheme is separated into categories depending on whether the vehicle carries passengers or commodities.…”

“…Each truck type is assigned a category. VISSIM randomly selects a value for each vehicle with a truck type under the heavy-gross vehicle category ( 4 , 5 ). The weight and power distribution values are independent of each other, that is, VISSIM might assign a high power to a low-weight vehicle.…”
