How and Why Users Use Social TV Systems? A Systematic Review of User Studies

Abstract: The development of social TV systems has gained momentum in the past decade. However, it is unclear how and why users use social TV. The goal of this systematic review is to identify trends in social TV user studies and understand how and why users use it following Geerts and De Grooff's social TV features. After searching for articles in major engineering and social science databases, we found 10 user studies that are mainly exploratory. They are predominantly qualitative and lack theory-based research and sy… Show more

“…Small Set of Articles : The previous literature reviews analyzed small samples, usually tens rather than hundreds of studies ( Bautista, Lin & Theng, 2016 ; Kim et al, 2013 ). The sample we analyzed here—725 user studies—is substantially larger than the size of the largest previous review.…”

“…Single Domain : While the earlier surveys tended to focus on one context or domain such as software systems ( Varghese, 2008 ), music ( Lee & Cunningham, 2013 ), or social television ( Bautista, Lin & Theng, 2016 ), our sample covers a variety of IT fields—19 to be specific—, thus providing a broader perspective on IT user studies than earlier surveys.…”

“…Scholarly studies in social TV systems use are scarce especially in the Nigerian context. In a systematic review conducted by J.R. Bautista et al (Bautista et al, 2016), there has been only 10 exploratory studies about users of social TV systems and the majority were done in European and North American countries. As Africa is gradually having advanced mobile, screen, and audio-visual technologies with one of the largest mobile phone markets globally and high smartphone ownership (Adeleke, 2020;Akpoja, 2021;Forenbacher et al, 2019;Winter et al, 2018), it is crucial to conduct user studies to understand Nigerian consumers' attitudes toward a multiscreen social TV system (Lin, 2018;Oturu, Takuro, 2020).…”
