How big data analytics use improves supply chain performance: considering the role of supply chain and information system strategies

Abstract: PurposeDrawing on the dynamic capabilities theory, this paper proposes that supply chain (SC) strategies (i.e. the lean SC and agile SC strategies) will mediate the relationship between big data analytics (BDA) and SC performance. Furthermore, from the perspective of strategic alignment, this study hypothesizes that the effect of the SC strategy on SC performance is differently moderated by the information system (IS) strategy (i.e. the IS innovator and IS conservative strategies).Design/methodology/approachTh… Show more

“…This research, similar to Lee (2002) and Wu et al (2014) classified SCSs into four constituents according to supply and demand uncertainties. This differs from the prevailing classifications in previous studies that classified SCSs according to demand uncertainty only while ignoring supply uncertainty (Fisher, 1997;Christopher and Towill, 2001;El Mokadem, 2017;Qi et al, 2017;Nakandala and Lau, 2019;Zimmermann et al, 2020;Wei et al, 2022).…”

“…The construct uses a total of four indicators, mainly focusing on downstream SCP – involving commonly used SCP indicators such as delivery time, consistency of orders and customer satisfaction. The focus on downstream is a commonly adopted approach in the literature (Wei et al , 2022; Zhou et al , 2023). Whitten et al (2012) underlines the importance of focusing on satisfying customer needs when measuring SCP.…”

“…(1) Although the research efforts on strategic IT alignment have been extensive, one aspect that has received scarce attention is the alignment of IT and business strategy at business function level. While there are some studies that address the alignment of IT and marketing strategy (Al-Surmi et al 2020;Hooper et al 2010) as well as IT and supply chain strategy (Qrunfleh and Tarafdar 2014;Wei et al 2022), we believe that further research in this area is warranted. Particularly, since the IT function takes on a central role within most organizations and often supports the strategy implementation of other business functions.…”
