How bothersome double-J ureteral stents are after semirigid and flexible ureteroscopy: a prospective single-institution observational study

Abstract: Ureteral stents are responsible for significant urinary symptoms and pain after semirigid and flexible ureteroscopy. They also considerably affect general health, working and sexual activity. Urologists should consider it carefully before stenting, inform patients about stent-related symptoms, and minimize stent indwelling time.

“…14 Unfortunately, ureteral stents are not free of complications and they are associated with the loss of quality of life in a high percentage of patients. 4 An obvious improvement in the present double-J ureteral stent design should be to reduce patient morbidity and to include biodegradation capability. BUS not only avoids a second removal surgery, thus reducing health costs, but it also prevents forgotten stent syndrome.…”

“…3 Unfortunately, stents are not free from side effects; they affect >88% of patients, with pain affecting *92.2%. 4 However, ureteral stents for IUP treatment have been proved effective. The main causes of stent-related symptoms are vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and bladder irritation caused by the distal curl of the stent.…”

“…Patients with recurrent urolithiasis report more bodily pain, depression, and lower health scores compared to the average population with increased anxiety and stress even between events 13 . This is compounded by a stone event which may lead to ureteric stenting with its documented negative effect on patients’ quality of life 2,3,4 . Hence including PROMs in outcome measures while investigating urolithiasis patients is vital.…”

“…Bosio et al highlighted question GQ to characterize the feeling about the stent, and 51.6% of patients who experienced double-pigtail stent answered they would feel "unhappy" or "terrible" to have another 1 in the future. 22 The concept of material reduction within the bladder seems necessary in order to decrease bladder mucosal irritation. [7][8][9] The influence of the shape of the bladder loop showed controversial results.…”
