“…For example, P1 mitigated the risks to their children by saying, “It is a bit of a worry, but probably no more than cycling on the road” and participant 3 said, “It’s part of the game (the risk of injury), like I said earlier, as many injuries that you can get from riding a bike”. Yet, comprehensive data from New Zealand [ 55 ] found cycling to have only 100 injuries requiring hospitalization per 1 million exposures. Conversely, rugby had 52,875 game injuries per 1 million exposures.…”

“…In conclusion, traffic injuries to cyclists increased substantially over the past two decades and have become a considerable public health burden in Hong Kong. Although the health benefits of cycling broadly outweigh the harms caused by traffic injuries and air pollution [52], and cycling has been empirically proved to be statistically less dangerous than many other recreational activities in New Zealand [53], the promotion of cycling in Hong Kong, particularly in urbanized areas with limited space for provision of cycling facilities, should be based on the condition that the safety and mobility of these vulnerable road users are consistently improved. Public health experts should work together with cycling communities, urban planners, traffic engineers, architects, environmentalists, and government officials at all levels to make Hong Kong a more cyclable city.…”

“…Compared with other, commonly accepted activities, an average trip by bicycle does not stand out as especially dangerousa game of rugby, we estimated, is 500 times more likely to cause a visit to the hospital Emergency Department. 22 It is important to note also that other health gains from cycling far outweigh the risks of injury. We found no increase in mortality amongst individuals who cycled to work on Census day in New Zealandin fact, there was a 15% lower all cause death rate for men and women combined, for those who cycled compared with people travelling by private vehicle.…”
