“…Nevertheless, the cumulative biomass of bacteria and fungi inhabiting deeper soil horizons can be as high as in the topsoil, and these microorganisms play similarly important roles in biogeochemical processes, including soil carbon and nitrogen cycling, soil formation, iron redox reactions, and pollutant degradation (Brewer et al, 2019).
