A crescente população mundial exige que as organizações se preparem para servir o mercado com alimentos saudáveis, em larga escala e com processos de produção mais limpos. A inovação no ambiente rural também otimiza a eficiência dos sistemas agroalimentares, do solo e dos recursos hídricos, e gera competitividade para os agentes do campo. Diante desse contexto, o objetivo do artigo é apresentar os resultados de uma revisão sistematizada da abordagem da inovação aberta na agricultura. Como resultado, ações de design, inovação, cadeia de valor, gestão do conhecimento, redes e partes interessadas podem facilitar a inovação aberta na agricultura. Os dados indicam que a pesquisa é conduzida por países desenvolvidos e, em geral, a inovação aberta é abordada sem especificar o tipo de inovação gerada. O estudo da inovação aberta na agricultura está em estágio embrionário e é necessário aprofundar a pesquisa teórica e empírica para fortalecer as organizações ativas no setor. La necesidad de medir el impacto social de la investigación ha planteado diferentes formas de evaluación, y en agricultura se habla de impact pathways, como herramientas que permiten reflejar el proceso sistémico de la innovación, así como los factores sociales y la contribución de diferentes actores en el mismo. Sin embargo, la multiplicidad y diversidad de actores potencialmente influyentes en los procesos de innovación plantea dificultades de participación para incluirlos en los procesos de evaluación de la investigación agraria. Este estudio propone las métricas alternativas o altmétricas, es decir, relativas a la atención que la literatura científica genera en los medios sociales, como una forma para introducir en los procesos de evaluación la opinión pública. Los resultados apuntan a que la opinión pública percibe la investigación sobre aceite de oliva como más significativa cuando es interdisciplinaria.

Applied agricultural research institutes play different roles in complex agricultural innovation processes, contributing to them with other actors. To foster learning and usable knowledge on how research actions influence such lasting innovation processes, there is a need to identify the causal mechanisms linking these actions and the effects of the changes they enable. A participatory, theory‐driven, ex‐post evaluation method, ImpresS, was developed by the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (Cirad). ImpresS reconstructs the innovation history and its impact pathway by analyzing behavioral mechanisms linked to stakeholders' individual reactions and responses, and underlying process mechanisms at a group level. ImpresS relies on iterative updating and refinement and on triangulating data sources and collection methods to ensure internal validity and to increase credibility by enabling different actors to express their viewpoints. Drawing on an in‐depth case study, we discuss how ImpresS makes it possible to draw robust conclusions on causal mechanisms while posing challenges linked to the group dynamics and power imbalances commonly encountered in participatory methods. As demonstrated by the case study, ImpresS generates policy‐relevant knowledge for future research projects. It also demonstrates how research actions can help coconstruct lasting dynamics that can survive fluctuating institutional support. Distinguishing between behavioral and process mechanisms benefits knowledge use as it makes it possible to disentangle the conditions that trigger changes in a given context while generating research questions concerning the external validity of mechanism hypotheses.
