PurposeThe purpose of this short reflection is to allow for an informed use of both phenomenography and phenomenology in information studies and cognate fields.Design/methodology/approachThe paper apprises uses of phenomenography found particularly in accounts of information literacy commonly describing phenomenography as distinct from phenomenology.FindingsBoth phenomenography and phenomenology continue to hold much credence in methods applied across scores of academic fields, with information studies being among those in the vanguard. Claims displaying differences of phenomenography from phenomenology are misleading and incomplete descriptions of phenomenology.Originality/valueThe paper presents newer materials on the origins of phenomenography and phenomenology to advocate for tighter relationships between and clearer applications of these methods in information studies and beyond.

Women represent nearly half of the population and if empowered, will enhance the pace of national development. Education is considered as a milestone for women empowerment because it enables them to respond to challenges, to confront their traditional role and change their lives. Ideally, it should be equity approach and not welfare oriented one. Women have so much unexplored potential which has hardly been harnessed. According to the census of 2011, the female literacy rate was 65.46% whereas male literacy rate was over 80%. Gram Panchayat is viewed as a solution to all the problems related to rural development and plays a significant role in the empowerment of the marginalized section of society, especially women. This analysis also reveals that libraries can have profound influence in dissemination of knowledge to empower women of the community-at-large. This paper discusses the effectiveness of Kanyashree Prakalpa in women empowerment and the role and contribution of Teachers, Gram Panchayats and Librarians as well as the challenges and changes that we must have to deal with during the process. Kanyashree Prakalpa, an initiative taken by the Government of West Bengal can be successfully spread among the community-at-large by the public libraries

This study aimed to examine the role of Tanzania Library Services Board (TLSB) in organizing, teaching and facilitating information literacy to users in the public library. Specifically the study examined the available facilities and resources available in public libraries that would facilitate the teaching of information literacy; established what users were taught during information literacy courses and identified barriers in implementing information literacy courses in public libraries. It also sought to gather views from the users on the roles of TLSB in organizing, teaching and facilitating information literacy courses in public libraries. The study was carried out in 7 regional libraries working under the administration of the National Central library in Dar es salaam. Data was collected through questionnaires, which were conveniently distributed among 58 library users who were found in the reading areas and other service points in the selected libraries. Face to face semi-structured interviews were carried out among purposely selected 11 librarians who were providing services at different points in the libraries. Results of the study indicated that TLSB was involved in organizing and teaching information literacy courses to users who visited the library either in groups or as individuals. Users were taught how to search for electronic resources, utilizing special collections, borrowing and returning library books and using the library OPAC. Challenges facing TLSB in offering information literacy courses included lack of expert trainers; limited number of facilities such as computers, some users did not want to attend training and lack of motivation among library staff to participate in teaching information literacy courses. The study recommended that TLSB should collaborate with other institutions by facilitating the teaching of information literacy courses to users in various libraries in the country.
