Background:Increased life expectancy and the growing phenomenon of aging can lead to increased burden of chronic diseases (CDs) which adversely affects the overall health of elderly, their sexuality in particular. Sexual life of an aged population is overlooked in many of the societies. In the present narrative review, we aim to assess the impact of CDs on sexual function of elderly people.Materials and Methods:We used internet databases including PubMed, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, Google Scholar, SID, Iran Medex, Magiran, IPPF, and UNFPA without time limit. Ninety-eight out of 174 relevant articles were selected which met the inclusion criteria: those articles were research-based in English or Persian (original or review articles) and textbooks; specified one or more CDs and sexual function of the cases; elderly people over the age of sixty, men and women; and coordination between articles and research goals. We excluded qualitative and case studies. We reported the most related CDs with sexual function in literature review and used the biological and psychological impact of the CDs on sexual function of elderly population based on the conceptual model of Verschuren et al. (2010).Results:The results of the studies were classified into the themes including physical, psychological, and cultural and social. Diabetes, cardiovascular, cancerous, and chronic respiratory diseases and also some medications can reduce sexual capacity and desire in particular resulting in negative impact on the quality of elderly sexual life. CDs may influence sexual expressions and responses which adversely affect one's mood and energy so that can cause depression and grief, as well as loss of self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-concept in elderly adults. The factors affecting sexuality of an elderly with CDs include cultural and mythical beliefs about age and illnesses, fear, and embarrass of changed physical appearance. The research conducted among elderly population examining the adverse influence of CDs on aged people's sexual life in general, sexual function and performance, and intimate interaction.Conclusion:It is considered that programs on sexual health needs of aged population for the health-care workers can prove beneficial in improving sexual health.

BackgroundThe purpose of this study is to assess attitudes toward premarital dating and sexual encounters in individuals aged 15–49 years in Tehran.MethodsUtilizing the attitudes section of an original cross-sectional study (n = 755) aimed at assessing sexual health needs of adults, this paper examined personal attitudes towards premarital dating, non-sexual relationships and sexual encounters in both male and female adults aged between 15–49 years. Multi-stage cluster random sampling and a validated/reliable questionnaire were used. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted using statistical software.ResultsThe results indicated that the majority of the participants were supportive of dating. Almost three-fourths of the males were more positively inclined towards non-sexual, yet tactile, affectionate interactions between unmarried males and females as opposed to only half of the females (70 % vs. 50.5 %). Also, males held significantly more liberal attitudes than females in their acceptance of premarital sex. On preserving virginity prior to marriage, 43 % of the males felt that it was important for a female to be a virgin, whereas only 26 % felt it was important for males to remain a virgin. Interestingly, more females (61 %) supported the importance of a female’s virginity compared with the importance of males’ virginity (48 %). This study showed that, being a male, of a younger age, single, and being less religious or being secular were important determinants of a liberal sexual attitude.ConclusionThese results might reflect a socio-cultural transition in the sexual attitudes of different age groups of participants - a phenomenon that will need empirical studies to unpack in the Iranian socio-cultural context.

Objective: identify the potential factors, difficulties and challenges in the realization of educational workshops with adolescents. Methodology: a descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, developed with the Mandacaru Flower Project. Data collection took place from May to June 2015. A search of all the documents and records in the Mandacaru Flower Project about the workshops was carried out and a questionnaire was applied to service professionals. The data were analyzed through the thematic analysis proposed by Minayo. Results: it was identified that the Mandacaru Flower Project uses nine different techniques to develop health education activities. The choice of technique is made according to the age of the target audience and the topic that will be discussed. From the analysis of the questionnaire emerged four thematic categories being: peculiarities of the work with adolescents, resources for the development of workshops, school as a space for promoting health and the challenge of inter and multiprofessionality in workshops with adolescents. Conclusion: it was observed that the Mandacaru Flower Project has a diversified methodology for working with adolescents. Metodologia: pesquisa descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa, desenvolvida junto ao Projeto Flor do Mandacaru. A coleta de dados ocorreu nos meses de maio a junho de 2015. Foi realizada uma busca em todos os documentos e registros existentes no Projeto Flor do Mandacaru sobre as oficinas e aplicado um questionário aos profissionais do serviço. Os dados foram considerados por meio da análise temática proposta por Minayo. Resultados: identificou-se que o Projeto Flor do Mandacaru utiliza nove técnicas diferentes para desenvolver atividades de educação em saúde. A escolha da técnica se dá de acordo com a idade do público alvo e o tema que será discutido. A partir da análise das informações, emergiram quatro categorias temáticas: singularidades do trabalho com adolescentes, recursos para o desenvolvimento das oficinas, escola como espaço para promoção da saúde e o desafio da inter e multiprofissionalidade nas oficinas com os adolescentes. Conclusão: observou-se que o Projeto Flor do Mandacaru dispõe de metodologias diversas em sua atuação junto aos adolescentes.
