Although environmental activists play an important role in addressing local environmental injustices, they find it difficult to legitimise their activities. They are frequently challenged by political and business forces on the grounds that they are raising barriers to local economic development and are often regarded as irrational or hysterical. In this study we analyse the legitimacy conferred on local environmental organisations by residents living near a polluting industrial site. Considering an individual's judgement of legitimacy as an attitude and drawing on the social psychological and risk-benefit analysis literatures, we define a model that explains how individuals' beliefs and perceptions about local environmental organisations and their context (in terms of the local industry risk-benefit controversy), together with personal environmental beliefs, influence their assessments of legitimacy. Results show that individuals' legitimacy judgements of local environmental organisations are directly influenced by beliefs about their credibility and the risk perceptions associated with the industrial area, and indirectly affected by personal environmental beliefs.

Studies assessing people’s willingness-to-pay for carbon offsets are overwhelmingly grounded in hypothetical stated-preference approaches. Here, we report on a large-scale observational field study involving a final sample of 63,520 bookings made with a European airline, allowing us to gauge willingness-to-pay for offsets in a revealed-preference approach. Our pre-registered study shows that the median willingness-to-pay to voluntarily offset a ton of CO2 from flight-related emissions is zero, with the mean willingness-to-pay being around 1 EUR. Neither prices of the offset nor airfares are predictive of offsetting behavior in a highly powered sample. Climate vulnerability of the destination has no significant impact on the compensation decision either. On the other hand, higher ancillary spending is associated with an increased likelihood to compensate, even though the effect size is low due to the general unwillingness to internalize flight-related emissions. Additionally, we find the choice of a vegetarian meal to be of similar predictive power (significant, but low in effect size given an overall low proportion of passengers choosing a vegetarian meal). Our results inform existing research on stated preferences as well as mitigation efforts relying on voluntary climate action.

Se realizó una revisión sobre comportamientos ambientales en el sector turismo, con el fin de generar conocimiento que contribuya a mejorar el comportamiento ambiental del sector. Para esto se utilizó una ecuación de búsqueda, en español en la base de datos Scielo y en inglés en la base de datos Scopus, se incluyeron artículos publicados durante los últimos 5 años. El resultado final, fueron 30 artículos que cumplían los criterios de inclusión para este estudio. El enfoque del artículo es novedoso porque aborda de forma integral según la revisión bibliográfica los diferentes modelos que buscan predecir el comportamiento, lo cual permite tener las bases teóricas para formular estrategias más completas enfocadas al cambio de comportamiento, como conclusión es necesario utilizar un abordaje integral en las estrategias que buscan la promoción de comportamientos ambientales en el sector turismo.
