How does strength of ties influence project performance in Chinese megaprojects?

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to investigate how the strength of ties (i.e. strong ties and weak ties) in megaproject networks influences project performance in terms of types of conflicts. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey was undertaken with professionals in Chinese megaprojects and 445 valid responses were received. A conflict-based theoretical model was developed and tested with structural equation modeling. Findings The results indicated that task conflict had a constructive effect on proje… Show more

“…In the cross-functional team of infrastructure projects, team diversity has a positive impact on task conflict (H2a). This is particularly true in the practice of infrastructure projects, where cross-functional team members often represent different functional departments, and they have different understandings of the assignment of project tasks and the prioritization of project goals, which can trigger task conflicts (Wu et al 2020). Expertise integration partially mediates the relationship between team diversity and ambidextrous innovation in the cross-functional teams of infrastructure projects (H3a, H3b).…”

“…It can also prevent premature consensus and stimulate more critical thinking (De Dreu 2006), which will promote ambidextrous innovation. In infrastructure project practice, because the cross-functional team members come from different functional departments, they have different views of the project plan and priorities of the project objectives, which will lead to task conflicts (Wu et al 2020). Besides, Liu and Leitner (2012) also emphasized that conflict is one of the antecedents of ambidexterity in complex engineering project teams.…”

“…In summary, previous studies have proved that the strength of ties and contractual flexibility can counter the rigidity of contractual arrangements, reduce the threat of business disruption and improve project performance (Song et al, 2018;Wu et al, 2020b). However, project performance cannot completely represent the goal of contractual flexibility in terms of improving project value (Ding and Zhang, 2020).…”

“…Furthermore, the strength of ties means that, in a given time or generation, an agent with different connections has a number of interactions with its neighbors (Roos et al, 2014). Consequently, because many megaproject activities are interrelated, mutually restrictive and accompanied by a high level of uncertainty and complexity (Flyvbjerg, 2014), this study interprets the strength of ties in megaprojects as: the degree of close connection, the frequency of mutual interaction, the level of input resources, and the consistency of common objectives (Wu et al, 2020b).…”
