How does technology challenge teacher education?

Abstract: The paper presents an overview of challenges and demands related to teachers’ digital skills and technology integration into educational content and processes. The paper raises a debate how technologies have created new skills gaps in pre-service and in-service teacher training and how that affected traditional forms of teacher education. Accordingly, it is discussed what interventions might be applicable to different contexts to address these challenges. It is argued that technologies should be viewed both as… Show more

“…The advancement of information technology is a challenge for educators in the learning process (Crossley & McNamara, 2016;Kaminskienė et al, 2022;Manongga et al, 2021). If a teacher only explains about knowledge, it is not uncommon for our explanations to be incomplete with Google's all-in-one explanation (Carroll et al, 2022;de Jong et al, 2019;Lapitan et al, 2021;Mupa & Chinooneka, 2015).…”

“…Both students and teachers attested that the value and relevance of LMS as a learning tool are heavily dependent on teachers' proficiency with the medium, on the course content and on how teachers design the activities and lessons in the platform. Digital technologies continue to bring challenges to teacher education, especially in the area of developing new competences to keep up with evolving learning environments (Kaminskienė et al, 2022). Given this, tailor-made information, training, and support for teachers are needed to maximize the use of LMSs in teaching and learning.…”

“…The proposals for the technological training of teachers are varied and they have evolved over time. Initially, research focused on the manipulative dimension of software and hardware, as seen in studies in the latter part of the 20th century (Kaminskien ė et al 2022). However, over time, the importance of more in-depth training was gradually recognised, including didactic-technological aspects and the correct integration of digital resources in the educational process (Gómez-Trigueros 2023;Sommerhoff et al 2023).…”
