How echinoccocosis affects potential cancer markers in plasma: galectin-3, sN-cadherin and sE-cadherin? a preliminary report

Abstract: BackgroundAn increasing number of publications are suggesting that galectin-3 (Gal-3) and soluble cadherin fragments, such as E-cadherin (sE-CAD) and N-cadherin (sN-CAD), may be considered as cancer markers. Despite the promising results of the studies, there are no data concerning their levels in the plasma of echinococcosis patients. In most cases, echinoccocosis affects the liver, and its symptoms and disease course are very similar to those of liver cancer. The aim of the present study was to observe wheth… Show more

“…Echinococcus in liver produces similar symptoms seen in liver cancer patients like mass, abdominal pain and jaundice. Gal −3, soluble E and N cadherin can be used as marker for differentiation between the two [16]. The values of Gal-3, soluble E cadherin was not estimation in our case.…”

“…Publication bias was assessed by Egger's test (15) and p < 0.1 was considered to imply a significant publication bias. from Europe (21,40,41,43,45,48), and two studies came from Oceania (23,24); five studies were published as the abstracts (27,28,35,37,42) and 28 studies were published as the full texts (16-26, 29-34, 36, 38-41, 43-48); and 29 studies were of high quality (16-26, 29, 30, 32-39, 41-48), but four studies were of low quality (27,28,31,40).…”

“…In this scenario, the authors suggest sEcadherin as a potential differential marker between echinococcosis and hepatic cancer, which has elevated sE-cadherin levels. 88 These data are of importance because some cases of echinococcosis clinically mimic hepatic malignancy. 89 The adhesion molecule sCD44 did not change in serum from patients with bacterial infection compared to healthy controls.…”
