How Hemostatic Agents Interact With the Coagulation Cascade

Abstract: Hemostasis is a critical component of the preservation of hemodynamic stability and operative visibility during surgery. Initially, hemostasis is achieved via the careful application of direct pressure to allow time for the coagulation cascade to create a fibrin and platelet plug. Other first-line methods of hemostasis in surgery include repair or ligation of the bleeding vessel with sutures, clips, or staples and coagulation of the bleeding site with a thermal energy-based device. When these methods are insuf… Show more

“…While platelets are the main cellular component in the coagulation cascade, by interacting with coagulations factors and resulting in a thrombus in the blood vessel at the site of injury, 32 our study results showed no significantly increased risk for VTE when the platelet count was elevated. Figure 2 demonstrates the dynamics of platelets and other coagulation markers in relation to time.…”

“…Proses terjadinya hemostasis tergantung pada kemampuan sistem bawaan tubuh untuk membentuk bekuan darah pada daerah perdarahan. 5 Salah satu cara untuk mengontrol perdarahan adalah dengan penggunaan agen hemostatik. 6 Dalam penggunaannya agen hemostasis dapat dibagi menjadi agen lokal dan agen sistemik.…”

“…Hemostasis is important for providing hemodynamic stability, maintaining visibility of the operative field, and reducing blood loss and associated blood transfusions. 4 , 5 Blood transfusions are often performed to combat uncontrolled blood loss in the operating room, but are a limited and expensive resource, increase risk of infection, and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. 6 , 7 Thus, elimination of unneeded transfusions would provide significant benefit.…”
