How I investigate neutropenia

Abstract: Neutropenia is a common laboratory finding in adults and children. Its underlying causes are extremely heterogeneous and include benign conditions, autoimmune disorders, infections, and malignancies. The clinical laboratory plays a central role in the diagnosis of these disorders, including data derived from hematology, microbiology, molecular biology/cytogenetics, and clinical chemistry. The purpose of this review is to (a) highlight the clinical, hematologic, and molecular genetic features of the major entit… Show more

“…Restricted cubic splines showed a decrease of the risk within the lower range of neutrophil counts, which reached the lowest risk around the median and then increased after that. Neutrophil aggregation is reported acting as a subclinical inflammation stage, while neutropenia reflects a physiological condition that the body may be in disorder, such as serious inflammation or myelosuppression [ 24 , 25 ]. The effect of preoperative and postoperative NLPR on AKI was a ‘J’ shape.…”

“…1,2 There are many causes of neutropenia, whether congenital or acquired. 3 Work-up of neutropenia is usually dictated by the associated clinical scenario but when chronic, stable, and mild or moderate in nature, isolated neutropenia is usually a benign condition with no increased risk of infection or progression to hematological malignancies.…”

“…Furthermore, the mean time to BEN registration from clozapine initiation was 2.7 years (SD = 4.0). Despite BEN often being an incidental finding in routine clinical care [32,33], our findings highlight the need for more definitive and precise guidelines for the screening of BEN in potential clozapine candidates, especially considering that BEN identification can be complicated in some individuals by periods of ANC readings within the widely accepted reference range [34]. In addition, the psychological impact of uncertainty experienced with clozapine interruption, continual monitoring and possible relapse cannot be overstated.…”
