How I Teach: Ultrasound-guided Peripheral Venous Access

Abstract: Ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous (IV) placement is often required for patients with difficult IV access and is associated with a reduction in central line placement. Despite the importance, there is no standardized technical approach, and there is limited ability to attain mastery through simulation. We describe our step-by-step approach for teaching ultrasound-guided IV placement at the bedside using short-axis dynamic guidance, with emphasis on advancing the needle and catheter device almost entirely… Show more

“…The development of Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous (USGPIV) cannulation has improved the procedure's overall success rate in a host of different situations. [3][4][5][6][7][8] However, effective ultrasound-guided venous cannulation might also be challenged by the type of ultrasound equipment available, procedure field, knowledge of anatomy, and hand-eye coordination skills which are necessitated by training. 8 Smart glasses are a type of wearable computer that includes a small camera for live streaming.…”

“…These two outstanding pieces reflect our initial vision when we proposed this new category of teaching review and serve as models for future manuscripts in this new submission category. The first focuses on how to teach about the concept of auto-positive end-expiratory pressure (auto-PEEP) ( 2 ) and the second on the use of ultrasound to place a peripheral intravenous catheter ( 3 ). These two papers demonstrate the spectrum of topics that are particularly appropriate, with one describing a simple way to teach a highly complex concept and the other sharing an expert approach to an everyday procedure in the hospital.…”
