“…The neo antigen induces the production of IgG antibodies which bind to the heparin-PF4 structure to form a heaprin-PF4-antibody complex. The complex can bind Fc receptors on the surface of platelets, neutrophils and monocytes and not only activate these cells but also lead to thrombin generation / release which ultimately leads to hypercoagulability, thrombosis and thrombocytopenia [2].…”
Heparin induced thrombocytopenia is a rare complication of heparin therapy that usually occurs within initial 5 to 10 days of heparin exposure. We present a rare case of delayed onset heparin induced thrombocytopenia that occurred one week after cessation.

“…The diagnosis of HIT is suspected clinically in patients who develop thrombocytopenia with or without thrombosis after heparin or low molecular weight heparin exposure. HIT is frequently confirmed by immunologic tests like enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or functional tests like serotonin-release assay (SRA) [4].…”
We report herein a patient with coronary artery disease that developed heparin-induced thrombocytopenia after coronary artery bypass graft with resulting thrombosis of multiple saphenous vein grafts and myocardial infarction after heparin exposure. The patient required lepirudin and a cardiac catheterization with placement of stents. Am.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
