How Many Species of Etlingera (Zingiberaceae) Are There in the Philippines?

Abstract: Based on studies of types and recent collections, the number of species of Etlingera Giseke in the Philippines is doubled from eight to 16. Three species (Etlingera alba, E. brevilabrum and E. sessilanthera) are reported here for the first time, E. pandanicarpa is synonymised with the Bornean E. fimbriobracteata, and four new combinations (E. bulusanensis, E. linearifolia, E. pubimarginata and E. subviridis) and one new name (E. pilosa) are published here. Nine lectotypifications are proposed, of which three r… Show more

“…This hypothesis is further supported by plant distributions (e.g. Poulsen & Docot, 2018 for Etlingera sessilanthera R.M.Sm.) and through biogeographical studies using molecular data to explain colonisation of the Philippines from Borneo via Palawan (e.g.…”

“…Our knowledge of the Zingiberaceae of the Philippines has been updated as a result of recent botanical explorations focused on the collection of gingers (e.g. Naive, 2017;Ambida et al, 2018;Poulsen & Docot, 2018;Acma et al, 2019;Docot et al, 2019a, b). Ridley (1905) enumerated 19 species of Philippine Zingiberaceae but now 122 species are known, of which 68% are endemic (Pelser et al, 2011 onwards;Zingiberaceae Resource Centre, 2019).…”

“…Etlingera Giseke is a genus of the ginger family belonging to subfamily Alpinioideae, tribe Alpinieae, with about 150 species distributed from Bhutan to Fiji, most of which are occurring in equatorial Malesia (Poulsen & Bau 2017;Poulsen & Docot 2018). At present, Etlingera is represented in the Philippines with 17 species, 10 of which are endemic (Pelser et al 2011;Poulsen & Docot 2018;Naive et al 2020).…”

The genus is less explored in the Philippines, most specifically in the island of Mindanao, but future fieldwork would probably result in the discovery of more species either endemic or as new records from neighboring countries.…”

“…Etlingera Giseke (Zingiberaceae) consists of more than 100 species distributed from India, Indo-China throughout Malesia to the Pacific Islands (Poulsen, 2006(Poulsen, , 2007(Poulsen, , 2012Poulsen & Docot, 2018). A revision of the genus in Sulawesi (Poulsen, 2012) included 46 species (of which 36 were new to Science).…”
