How much and when to innovate

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of market innovation in driving service performance in the context of environmental pressures. This paper argues from the complexity theory that the development and the implementation of market innovation must critically examine the effect of customer demand and competitive intensity in the innovation efforts of service firms. Design/methodology/approach Data from different sub-sectors of the services industry of a growing emerging African economy are … Show more

“…This result signifies that the positive nexus between innovation and SME performance gets stronger for a firm with a high external environment awareness. Indeed, innovation is recognized as an essential tool for firms to combat environmental issues that can impact their performance [72]. In this study, the external environment is tested as a moderator in the relationship between innovation and SME performance.…”

“…That is, the model variables were analysed first through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using maximum likelihood estimation to evaluate the distinctness of the main study constructs before conducting the second step which was structural equation modelling (SEM) [ 93 ]. These approaches are powerful statistical tools for testing association among latent constructs and examine a priori hypotheses regarding relationships between observed and latent variables [ 94 ].…”

“…Thirdly, the study's hypothesized paths were analyzed by using the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique. It is considered one of the most favored techniques in causal modeling because it provides a control for the measurement error and information about the model fit of the given model [107,108]. This study used the reflective constructs of government support, entrepreneur knowledge, SMFE development, and local economic development.…”
