Malaysian oil palm plantations contributed 2.7% of Malaysian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2020 and became the world’s second largest producer of palm oil after Indonesia. Unfortunately, the expansion of oil palm plantations has always been linked to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil erosion. Despite the negative environmental repercussions, there is no denying that the rapid expansion of oil palm plantations has had beneficial social and economic impacts. Therefore, in this study, researchers aim to review recent studies on the socioeconomic impacts of oil palm plantations in Malaysia for the last decade (2012 – 2022). This study also identifies challenges faced by rural communities who are participated in oil palm cultivation. Since this is a conceptual paper, secondary sources, such as research articles, government reports, and published research works, are used in this study. We employed desktop study method to search the academic papers and reports from online databases. Most the papers agreed that land development for oil palm enhances socioeconomic levels, especially among rural communities by providing job opportunities, creating small businesses, reducing poverty, and improving their livelihoods. However, the involvement of farmers and planters in oil palm downstream activities and multiple crop cultivation remains low since small-scale farmers highly depend on selling fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to get their income. The drop in crude palm oil prices because of the international market has severely affected oil palm smallholders’ income. Most of previous research also believed sustainable oil palm plantation helps smallholders improve their socioeconomic conditions. The authorities may also make more efforts to promote sustainable plantations, especially among smallholders.

Sector-specific strategies are needed to transition toward a low-carbon economy. Palm oil is a large-scale agriculture commodity in Malaysia, with a considerable carbon footprint. Therefore, decarbonization of the palm oil sector is crucial, accounting for emissions and mitigation opportunities along the entire value chain. Though several of the previous works have optimized the palm oil value chain (POVC), there exists a significant gap in the comprehensive evaluation of strategies to decarbonize the POVC. To address this gap, this work proposes a systematic approach to design an optimal POVC with minimum GHG emissions. This study considers integrated oil palm plantations (OPPs), integrated palm oil mills (POMs), and palm oil refineries (PORs) within the POVC boundary. An integrated OPP refers to plantation with an onsite biorefinery, while an integrated POM includes the milling process, biorefinery, palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment, and biogas upgradation. A mathematical optimization (mixed integer nonlinear programming, MINLP) model was developed to determine the optimal process design and pathway selection along the POVC. The proposed model is illustrated with a case study of POVC in Johor, Malaysia that includes 15 OPPs, 5 POMs, and 1 POR. The optimization was performed under two scenarios�maximizing economic performance (S1) and maximizing GHG savings (S2). The results of this study show a significant improvement in the annual economic performance from USD 85 million in the existing baseline scenario to USD 167 million in S1. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that optimal technology and pathway selection can result in significant GHG savings up to 6.04 tCO 2 /ha at OPPs and 0.62 tCO 2 /t FFB at POMs, respectively.

Indonesia is known as a country with a very high wealth of biodiversity, both at the ecosystem scale, however, Indonesia is also noted as a country that has an extraordinary vulnerability to the decline/loss of potential biodiversity. So far, scientific research on the impact on biodiversity, especially on avian species in oil palm development in Central Sulawesi province has never been carried out. This study aims to determine the diversity of bird species in oil palm plantation land cover, this is done because birds are one indicator of environmental quality. This research was conducted in oil palm plantations. Data were taken from 5-year and 15-year old oil palm land covers. The research was conducted from June to August 2023. Avian species inventory data collection was carried out using a combination method of strip transect and point observation and the help of other observation tools such as drones. Data analysis calculations using a laptop device and Microsoft Excel software. The results of this study found 177 individuals from 26 avian species belonging to 16 families, 3 avian species are endemic to Sulawesi. Avian species diversity in both 5-year-old and 15-year-old oil palm land covers was categorized as moderate (2.669 and 2.609), with high levels of evenness at 0.891 and 0.886, respectively. Avian species composition between the 5-year-old and 15-year-old oil palm land covers was relatively similar, as indicated by the 50% species similarity index. The high level of species similarity is due to the fact that both land covers have similar characteristics, namely both are dominated by oil palm plants. The presence of land covers close to the research site supports the presence of various avian species. Both land covers studied are adjacent to rice fields and water canals, which influence the increase in avian species diversity.
