How Power-to-Gas strategy could reduce national Natural Gas consumption over the energy crisis period

Abstract: Europe is facing an energy crisis caused by the dramatic rise in gas prices. This situation is damaging the European economy and urgent measures to reduce gas consumption are crucial in the short term. This paper aims to analyse the potential contribution of the Power-to-Gas strategy to reduce the Italian consumption of Natural Gas (NG) in the context of the current energy crisis. To do so, the Italian energy system has been modelled by means the EnergyPLAN software. The electrolysers’ installation in the Ital… Show more

“…However, Russia disagreed, causing friction between the two countries and further impacting the sector's economy (Quintino et al, 2023). In this context, it is worth mentioning that Europe imports about 90% of its total gas consumption and about 45% of this comes from Russia (Pastore et al, 2022). To highlight te idea, in order to prevent price reductions due to low demand, members and partners of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries proposed a reduction in oil production (Quintino et al, 2023), supporting the approach encouraged by Saudi Arabia, but as it was previously specified, Russia refused.…”

“…In this case, the final product is known as "green Hydrogen". As discussed in [13], the hydrogen could play an important role to reduce the natural gas consumption in the near future. There are several sectors that the application of Hydrogen can be defined inside the community:…”

“…Furthermore, a switch from the sectorial point of view to a holistic one, for what concerns energy sectors, is needed, and can be achieved via the Smart Energy Systems (SES) approach. Such an approach is based on the combination and coordination of the electricity, thermal and gas grid, in order to utilize the synergies between them, to maximize efficiency and reduce overall costs [1,[12][13][14][15][16][17] One of the key drivers of the energy transition is hydrogen produced by RES, known as green hydrogen, which can be exploited in several ways, such as blending with natural gas in the gas grid, with a volume concentration as high as 20%, without any significant risk [16], with a consequent reduction of the natural gas consumption [18]. Furthermore, hydrogen can be used in high-temperature industrial processes, in the chemical industry for ammonia and methanol production, in the mobility sector by direct utilization in fuel cell vehicles or by synthesis of electro-fuel to allow its use in existing vehicles.…”
