How research data is cited in scholarly literature: A case study of HINTS

Abstract: This study investigated how Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) data from the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) was cited in the scholarly literature. It addressed the following research questions: (1) What patterns of citations exist among authors of research articles using HINTS data? and (2) How is the citation format of HINTS data characterized? We collected scholarly articles that used HINTS data as primary or secondary data for analysis from Web of Science databases and HINTS publication… Show more

“…As demonstrated in previous studies (M. S. Mayernik, Hart, Maull, & Weber, 2017;Parsons, Duerr, & Minster, 2010;Yoon, Chung, Lee, & Kim, 2019), including data citation in a reference list is not a normative behaviour yet. There are several approaches for encouraging data citation behaviours: having research funders or publishers require authors using data to cite data in their publications, having research institutes or universities give incentives to cited researchers for their data so that researchers develop a culture of data citation, and developing standards so that researchers can easily cite datasets in their scholarly articles as they do for other scholarly publications.…”

“…However, they did not distinguish between the two methods, nor report the frequency of each. Yoon et al (2019) analysed the reuse of HINTS (Health Information National Trends Survey) data based on an alternate definition of two methods. They defined primary reuse as reuse of HINTS data only, and secondary reuse as reuse of HINTS data alongside other data, where HINTS data was prioritized.…”

“…Note that reused data for both reuse modes included those created or collected by the authors in past studies. In addition, note that the definitions of the two modes of data reuse differ from the primary and secondary reuse used by Yoon et al (2019). Their definition is described in Section 2.…”

“…Additionally, some studies also utilized text content to deeply explore the role, function, and relationship of KEs (Li & Yan, 2018;Li, Yan, & Feng, 2017;. Identifying the pattern of citations and the use of KEs through the content of academic papers is also on the trail (Yoon et al, 2019).…”
