How seasons, weather, and part of day influence baseline affective valence in laboratory research participants?

Abstract: Many people believe that weather influences their emotional state. Along similar lines, some researchers in affective science are concerned whether testing individuals at a different time of year, a different part of the day, or in different weather conditions (e.g., in a cold and rainy morning vs. a hot evening) influences how research participants feel upon entering a study; thus inflating the measurement error. Few studies have investigated the link between baseline affective levels and the research context… Show more

“…Furthermore, wind factors were found to be positively correlated with positive mood, restorative effects, and vitality, which is consistent with Simonsohn et al's findings [47], whereas Behnke et al's study was conducted outdoors in a cold climate, thereby producing different results [48].…”

“…Personal thermal management (PTM) is a way to adjust the temperature of the body’s surface environment through changes in external media to maintain and ensure that the body is in a safe and comfortable state. It is determined that the phase transition temperature should be situated between 18 and 36 °C to ensure skin comfort and improve thermal comfort. Traditional thermal management methods , such as power-assisted garment , and wearable fabric-based materials are not only highly energy consuming but also have limited effectiveness in their heat dissipation efficiency, which may not be sufficient to satisfy the body’s needs.…”

“…Emotional brain, from which derives most of the life expression is tightly related to important circadian-regulated sleep centers determining critical neurobiological and behavioral oscillations. From that, we are quite aware of the great impact of geophysical dynamics in affective behavior even in the most well-controlled scenarios 1 . As so it becomes apparent that indeed we may experience different feelings of being in love depending on the time of the day, with weekly, monthly, yearly, and seasonal variations.…”

Likewise, such dynamics clearly affect sleep as the most conspicuous circadian rhythm dictating human physiology in about one-third of each day.…”
