Abstract. Challenges in the development of state-of-the-art navigation tools involve the synchronous generation of user-tailored natural language directions and accompanying graphical representations. Of particular interest is the combination of indoor and outdoor scenarios. We describe an architecture for simultaneously generating route directions and suitable visualizations of the navigational context for walking directions. We present a representation model for 3D environments, the spatial model, and a route representation format based on OpenGIS standards, aiming at an elegant and efficient way to support users with and without knowledge about the environment.

Interpreting spatial language in image captions

The map as a tool for accessing data has become very popular in recent years, but a lot of data does not have the necessary spatial meta-data to allow for that. Some data such as photographs however have spatial information in their captions and if this could be extracted, then they could be made available via map-based interfaces. Towards this goal we introduce a model and spatio-linguistic reasoner for interpreting the spatial information in image captions that is based upon quantitative data about spatial language use acquired directly from people. Spatial language is inherently vague and both the model and reasoner have been designed to incorporate this vagueness at the quantitative level and not only qualitatively.

Urban granularities—a data structure for cognitively ergonomic route directions

This paper addresses a data structure specification for route directions that incorporates essential aspects of cognitive information processing. Specifically, we characterize levels of granularity in route directions as the result of the hierarchical organization of urban spatial knowledge. We discuss changes of granularity in route directions that result from combining elementary route information into higher-order elements (so called spatial chunking). We provide a framework that captures the pertinent aspects of spatial chunking. The framework is based on established principles used-from a cognitive perspectivefor changing the granularity in route directions. The data structure we specify based on this framework allows us to bridge the gap between results from behavioral cognitive science studies and requirements of information systems. We discuss the theoretical underpinning of the core elements of the data structure and provide examples for its application.
