How Stable is Leisure Satisfaction over Time? A Latent Trait-State-Occasion Analysis of Dutch Panel Data

Abstract: This study used a trait-state-occasion (TSO) model to isolate stable trait variance, occasion-specific state variance, and shared method related variance in a measure for leisure satisfaction in a Dutch nationally representative nine-year panel study. Findings indicate that satisfaction with leisure time is a consistently stronger indicator of overall leisure satisfaction than satisfaction with leisure activities. About half of the variance in leisure satisfaction is stable trait variance, with the remaining v… Show more

“…On the contrary, women in the high-level care profile reported a relatively lower level of leisure satisfaction and leisure time sufficiency compared to the others. It is speculated that whether one enjoys quality leisure time without the interruption of others (e.g., children) can be more critical than the absolute amount of leisure time [ 42 ]. Several researchers have demonstrated that women’s free time at home is generally not in continuous time blocks [ 4 , 81 ].…”

“…Nevertheless, a lack of leisure time negatively influences a person’s mental health and weakens individual discretion [ 41 ]. Leisure time adequacy reflects the mental and emotional resources that a woman can draw on for her everyday pastimes [ 42 ]. Besides the absolute amount of leisure time, several researchers have highlighted the importance of perceived time sufficiency in subjective wellbeing [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…Regarding work status, self-employed individuals have more flexible working hours than those who are employed, which allows more market-oriented work to be performed during leisure periods and, thus, decreases overall time for leisure [43]. Furthermore, studies suggest childcare responsibilities decrease with an increase in income or working hours [44,45].…”

“…Leisure time has also been investigated as a factor affecting satisfaction. The results of a study by Gelissen [28] indicate that increased time spent on leisure activities increases the level of satisfaction. Since leisure is an activity based on individual preferences, sufficient time for its utilization can have a positive effect on satisfaction.…”
